Deadbolt's "I Should Have Killed You" seems to bring this band full circle in that it reminds me very much of their first cd "Shrunken Head". There is a pervasive gloom surrounding this whole cd (wonderfully Deadbolt!) and it seems to be tight and polished. Stand out songs are "Scary Voodoo Girl", "Telephone the Dead", and "Tell Me Where He Lies". See if you can catch the awesome "Tijuana Hit Squad" reference in "Spot Where They Gunned Him Down"! If you're already a fan it is a must have of course. If you're new to Deadbolt, I would highly recommend "Voodoo Trucker", "Tiki Man", and "Tijuana Hit Squad" which I think are better records.

When Peter Murphy first joined Bauhaus in 1978, in Northampton, England, at the behest of guitarist Daniel Ash, he had never written a single song. It was impossible to tell that Bauhaus would be the gut-busting, genre-defying phenomenon it turned out to be - that is, for about six weeks, which is how long it took Bauhaus to get noticed and shoved into the studio at Beck Studios in Wellingborough. Within a couple of years they were hugely successful in the UK, and scored their second-biggest hit with a distorted, up-tempo cover of Ziggy Stardust. Bauhaus is largely considered to be the first gothic rock group, which makes Peter Murphy the first goth singer - in fact, he has been dubbed "The Godfather of Goth."

Five years and four albums later, the group split up, but Peter Murphy kept on making music, often with a penchant for metaphysical or religious lyricism, which went over the heads of many of his fans in the UK.

Wool formed in the early '90s when brothers Peter and Franz Stahl (vocals/guitar and guitar/vocals, respectively) were forced to terminate their popular band Scream when bassist Skeeter Thompson went AWOL and drummer Dave Grohl joined Seattle grunge band Nirvana mid-way through a U.S. tour. The brothers then teamed up with former Government Issue and future Burning Airlines drummer Peter Moffett and Seattle native and ex-Concrete Blonde bassist Al Bloch (brother of Seattle Sub-Pop legend Kurt Bloch from the Fastbacks).

The quartet's first single "Little Darlin'", is a widely regarded punk single. Then, the band released an EP, 1992's rollicking Budspawn, which was released independently on External Records. The material on Budspawn combined the four members' inherent punk aesthetics with a tendency toward more straight-ahead, anthemic hard rock and drug-induced psychedelia.

Following a line-up change in which Moffett was replaced by former Inside Out and Chain of Strength drummer, Chris Bratton, Wool was signed to London Records in the newly punk-friendly climate of 1993. The band recorded Box Set in early 1994 and released it in the Fall of that year. Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, Box Set expanded on the basic blueprint of Wool's already established sound.

After a less than enthusiastic commercial response to Box Set, the band was dropped by London Records, early on in 1996. Wool recorded new demos in late '94 and late '95, but split up by summer of 1996. Later on guitarist/vocalist Franz Stahl became the touring guitarist for Japanese musician J, and joined former Scream band mate Dave Grohl in the Foo Fighters, replacing departing guitarist Pat Smear. Franz's tenure in the band included the entire world tour for the 1997 album The Colour and the Shape. Peter Stahl went on to play with Earthlings? and Goatsnake and appeared on several of Josh Homme's (Queens of the Stone Age) The Desert Sessions albums. Later on he became a Tour Manager for many bands, including Foo Fighters, Cave In and Rammstein.

On their second album, the sneeringly-titled "Dropped", Mindfunk vent a little label-related bitterness, and attempt to separate themselves meaningfully from the funk-metal pack. World-class producer Terry Date delivers the slowed-down grooves in an airtight, vacuum sealed muscular-as-hell package that would presage the work he did for Soundgarden on "Badmotorfinger." Its worth comparing the two albums as _Dropped_ does contain more than one obvious nod in the direction of Seattle ( and not just because they induct alt.rock's version of Pete Best - Jason Everman - to play second fiddle to Louis J. Svitek's lead guitar). Opener "Goddess", with its excellent riffing and understated solo work, and the insistent, almost middle-eastern drone metal of "In The Way Eye" are to me the most interesting of this rather lengthy, mostly mid-tempo sophomore set. Having lost drummer extraordinaire Reed St. Mark to Celtic Frost, much of the rhytmic energy and flashy musicianship of their self-titled debut is gone. Stripped down thusly, the songs reveal themselves to be brooding,intensely focused groove monsters that can occasionally end up just slightly on this side of meandering. The album's biggest sin is its sameness, and towards the latter fourth of the album it starts to get a little long in the tooth. "Mama, Moses and Me" is probably the only track that recalls the manic energy of the debut, more often than not replaced with more moody, solemn work like "Drowning." Solid, almost classy in some ways, but it could have really used one or two more uptempo tunes and a few of the psychedelic excesses shaved from the third album.

What a backwards rock record The Dirt of Luck is.  Seriously, think about it. Nevermind the double-edge of the title -- there's a mention of good fortune, but really this is just about the grit it coats itself in -- and just sit and listen to this record.

It's a tricky bit of music. At first, it seems perfectly on the up-and-up, of its time and place, because there's something geographic about Mary Timony's sound. When she was in the all-girl band Autoclave in D.C. -- and their short Discography, released on Dischord, is essential indie rock -- their sound tightened up in the tangled coil of that city's streets, in the camraderie of a tight-knit scene. She was in Boston when Helium made The Dirt of Luck, though, and this sounds like the dingy sludge and icy winds of a Northeastern winter. It's chilly and timeless, brittle with the energy of punk rock but delivered in subtler layers, evoking classic rock and other genres.

From there, even if its feels at home, the record is awfully damn confusing. There's the obvious -- that a band called Helium sounds so goddamn low. This is craggy, subterranean shit. Part of this comes from Timony herself (she often plays in a D-tuning), and part comes from Ash Bowie's thundering bass.

Vocalist Lisa Kekaula guitarist Bob Venuum formed the BellRays around 1990 in Riverside, CA. Originally, the duo leaned heavily on a vintage R&B sound flecked with smoky jazz overtones. But with the addition of guitarist Tony Fate and Venumm moving to bass, the sound soon began to mix Kekaula's alley cat soul vocals with a biting punk rock bottom end. The In the Light of the Sun cassette release appeared in 1993, followed by the "Wall of Soul" 7" two years later. the BellRays issued their debut full-length, Let It Blast, in 1998 and supported it with an extensive tour that included a particularly fiery appearance at Austin's South by Southwest conference. By now, drummer Ray Chin had joined the fold, and the 'Rays were making waves with their furiously passionate sound. The Grand Fury LP dropped in 2001 from Los Angeles indie Upper Cut and was followed by a European release combining it with Let It Blast. Tours with notables like Rocket From the Crypt and Nashville Pussy continued to spread the word, and In Music We Trust reissued In the Light of the Sun. 2003 saw the Upper Cut release of Raw Collection, an odds 'n' sods compilation featuring B-sides, rarities, and vinyl-only material from 1995 through 2002. Red White and Black also arrived in 2003, and the band continued to crank out soulful garage-punk on 2006's Have a Little Faith and 2008's Hard, Sweet and Sticky.
