Joy Division - Ajanta Theatre, UK 1980

Joy Division - Ajanta Theatre

Derby, UK

April 19,  1980

aka -  A Journey That Leads To The Sun

Very Good to Good Audience Recording@ flac

Info provided by http://www.joydiv.org

For your interest I might just mention that I've always seen this gig referred to as the Ajanta Theatre, but back then we all knew it as the Ajanta Cinema. The name is an Indian name because it used to show Indian films, because Derby had (and has) quite a large Indian and Pakistani community. The cinema itself was just outside the town centre and at that time pretty much stood on its own, as I remember. That remoteness - and the fact that it was a bit run down and seedy, made it ideal for holding punk gigs. I saw quite a few bands there between1978-80, including ATV, Stiff Little Fingers, The Lurkers, Manicured Noise, The Pop Group, The Slits, The Mekons. I'd say Joy Division were the biggest name band that played there (especially as it was so late in their history).

Loop - Edizone Limitata di 1000 Copie

Loop - Limited Edition 1,000 Copies

Soundboard @320

The band was formed in 1986 by Robert Hampson (vocals, guitar), with his then girlfriend Becky Stewart on drums. Bex was soon replaced by John Wills (The Servants) and Glen Ray, with James Endeacott on guitar. Initially releasing records on their own Head label, their first release was 1987's '16 Dreams', with debut album Heaven's End following later that year. The band's psychedelic/drone rock gained comparisons with Spacemen 3.

Notes: "Edizone Limitata di 1000 Copie". Appears to be the complete concert from which "Got To Get It Over (Live)" from Dual was extracted. Oddly enough, the sound on this is vastly superior to the version from DUAL (provided that they are, in fact, from the same show). As a matter of opinion, these live versions are given a much more muscular workout than the studio versions, at least as far as the tracks from A GILDED ETERNITY are concerned. "Mother Sky" is a cover of a song by Can.

Iron Maiden fans know about the brilliant 1981 live EP "Maiden Japan", recorded on a Japanese tour and featuring the last Maiden recordings ever to feature Paul DiAnno on vocals. However, many of you do not know that the whole show from which these recordings originate was released some years ago, in the form of a very limited-edition fan-club-only CD. Mercury Rev - The Black Sessions Paris, France

Mercury Rev - The Black Sessions

August 28, 2001

Paris, France

FM Source @ 128

Not so much a band as a long, strange trip, the chaotic avant pop pranksters Mercury Rev formed in Buffalo, NY, in the late '80s. Originally comprised of vocalist David Baker, vocalist/silver pickup guitarist Jonathan Donahue, guitar shaper/single-exhaust clarinetist Grasshopper (born Sean Mackowiak), rooster-tail bass flutist Suzanne Thorpe, bass explorer Dave Fridmann, and mojo stick drummer Jimy Chambers, the sextet -- always rife with personality conflicts -- interacted with one another infrequently, and their first recordings evolved simply as a means of creating soundtracks for the members' experimental student films as well as for Howard Nelson's Lite-Brite and Marco Fogg's Sugardaddy Sea.
