The Dead Milkmen - Soul Rotation (Out of Print)

The Dead Milkmen - Soul Rotation -1992
Studio Soundboard Recordings @256

During their heyday in the late '80s, the Dead Milkmen led a crop of college-radio jokesters that also included Mojo Nixon, King Missile, and Too Much Joy, among others. Playing a basic, happily amateurish brand of punk-pop, the Milkmen skewered popular culture, indie trend-followers, and the intellectually challenged, while frequently indulging their taste for tastelessness. Critics alternately praised and dismissed the band as geeky, juvenile wiseasses -- virtually every review seemed to contain the word "sophomoric," and either you found them funny or you didn't. But despite the mixed reviews, the Milkmen earned a devoted cult following (which famously included Detroit Tigers utility infielder Jim Walewander), a few novelty hits on college radio, and even an MTV hit with "Punk Rock Girl." As polarizing as their sense of humor was among critics, it was what fans wanted and came to expect, and attempts to move into more genuine, serious territory during the '90s effectively spelled the end of the band. Oddly enough, by that time, they were exerting at least a small measure of influence -- perhaps more than any of their peers, they paved the way for the legion of smart-assed geek-rockers who ruled alternative radio for a brief period in the mid-'90s.
the Dead Milkmen were formed at Philadelphia's Temple University in 1983. Guitarist and sometime vocalist Joe Jack Talcum (born Joe Genaro) and lead singer Rodney Anonymous (aka Rodney Amadeus Anonymous, aka Rodney Anonymous Melloncamp, born Rodney Linderman) grew up together in the small Pennsylvania town of Wagontown. During high school, Genaro started writing a newsletter about a fictional band called the Dead Milkmen, and the exploits of its lead singer Jack Talcum. When Genaro graduated and enrolled at Temple, he and Linderman kept up a songwriting partnership through the mail. Through his acquaintances at Temple, Genaro met drummer Dean Clean (born Dean Sabatino), who played in a local punk band called Narthex, and bassist Dave Blood (identified only as Dave S.), with whom he struck up a songwriting partnership. All three started playing together in 1983, and with Rodney Anonymous joining them that summer, they performed their first gig as the Dead Milkmen.

Bill Hicks - Sane Man 1989 (Complete)

Tool & The Connection with Bill Hicks...
"This is a Bill Hicks interview, not a Tool interview," declares Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan over the phone. Although California's progressive metalists have imposed a press blackout in order to protect the lyrical integrity of their brand new album, Aenima, Keenan has reluctantly made an exception to discuss Bill Hicks. After all, the late, Austin-based comedian gets big play on Aenima: several of his routines are sampled, there's a painting of him in the CD booklet titled Another Dead Hero, and the disc's back cover inlay depicts Hicks' California-in-the-ocean "Arizona Bay" theory. So, while Keenan says Aenima isn't a tribute to Hicks, he's fully aware what kind of exposure this highly anticipated album should give the late comedian.

“… probably the most underestimated musician on the planet and also one of the most advanced.” —Eric Clapton

Known for much of the past decade as the brilliant slide guitarist with John Hiatt and the Goners, Sonny Landreth has come into his own. On his latest release, “The Road We’re On,” Landreth returned to his bluesy roots in the Louisiana swamps and earned a 2004 Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Recording. For all his explorations on past albums and projects, which have led him into Cajun and Zydeco, progressive jazz and the realm of singer-songwriters, the great slide guitarist and songwriter keeps returning home, to the place where American popular music began.

“The blues,” says Landreth, “is the core of it all.”

Some might say Landreth was fated to be a slide guitar wizard, born as he was in Canton, Miss., the birthplace of legendary slide guitarist Elmore James. In fact, when he was five, his family moved to Lafayette, La., where Landreth grew up surrounded by Cajun music and its lifestyle. Landreth picked up trumpet at 10, guitar in his teens, moved with his roots-rock band to Colorado for a while where he met and played with the young fusion-blues guitarist, Robben Ford, and began to develop his unique slide-and-chording guitar technique.

Returning to Louisiana, Landreth worked with several noted Cajun bands, including Zachary Richard, Beausoleil, Red Beans & Rice. In 1979, he became the first white musician hired into the band of the late Zydeco “King,” Clifton Chenier.

In the years that followed, Landreth continued to sharpen his extraordinary guitar chops, while building a reputation as a singer and songwriter. He has done session work for rock guitar giant Leslie West, harmonica legend Junior Wells, Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, country superstar Dolly Parton, British bluesman John Mayall and singer-songwriters Kenny Loggins, Marshall Crenshaw and John Hiatt.

On his latest release, Landreth revisits the roots that have shaped his life and sound. “It was like going back to the fountain to do ‘The Road We’re On,’” he says. “Playing this music is as natural for me as going to the crawfish festival. It’s something I was born to do.”

Heifervescent - Sampler Mix

Heifervescent - Sampler
Studio Recordings @320
Tracks Shared under Creative Commons License

Heifervescent is essentially the solo project of Andy Doran, writing, performing and producing each track. The music has often been classed as beautiful yet sullen soundscapes, laying strong simple melodies and chiming guitars onto a bed of ambient string and hypnotic electronic arrangements. This has certainly been the case of the latest offering Little Egg and 2005's Pondlife Fiasco.

Way before Heifervescent, Andy Doran was singer/songwriter with Monkeyland, a 4 piece indie guitar band based in the North West of England. In the 1990s, in the midst of BritPop, Monkeyland played alongside notable indie bands such as Shed Seven, The House of Love, Power of Dreams and The Railway Children and released Placebo, a 4 track EP. As the decade came to a close, so did the band.

In 2000, there was a brief reformation as Cannula, this time with Dave Spencer on vocals and Andy on guitars and synths. The band recorded one album 'A Neon Serenade' which you can listen to here. Cannula was relatively short lived, after which Andy went back to working with animation, producing videos for Inspiral Carpets and Mountaineers. Dave and Woody, Monkeyland's drummer have since been recording and performing together under Cheshire Lines Committee.

In 2002 a solo venture began under the name of Heifervescent, and the debut album Hoofed and Dangerous was produced, with Monkeyland bass player, Neil Wignall adding some deep tones. This was followed by the folkier Verbal Bandit in 2003 and then the darker Murder in the Garden in 2004.

2005 brought the most played Heifervescent album so far - Pondlife Fiasco, featuring the most downloaded Heifervescent track - Deep Sea Diver. An instrumental version of Pondlife was also produced, many tracks being used for commercial use in advertising and film. Between 2005 and 2010, Andy spent much time writing for advertising, animation and experimental work, then in 2010 released The Glue Factory. All the tracks on this album were recorded at least 5 years before, but had never made it past the mastering mix. In 2011, Andy also revsited lots of Monkeyland tracks that had previously never got past the demo stage. This came out as a new set of recordings of Monkeyland songs called Further Adventures in Monkeyland.

Immediately after this Andy started working on a new album. Over 30 tracks were written and recorded, but eventually this was shortlisted to the 12 tracks which now form Little Egg, Heifervescent's 7th album.

Joy Division - Ajanta Theatre
Derby, UK
April 19,  1980
aka -  A Journey That Leads To The Sun
Very Good to Good Audience Recording@ flac

For your interest I might just mention that I've always seen this gig referred to as the Ajanta Theatre, but back then we all knew it as the Ajanta Cinema. The name is an Indian name because it used to show Indian films, because Derby had (and has) quite a large Indian and Pakistani community. The cinema itself was just outside the town centre and at that time pretty much stood on its own, as I remember. That remoteness - and the fact that it was a bit run down and seedy, made it ideal for holding punk gigs. I saw quite a few bands there between1978-80, including ATV, Stiff Little Fingers, The Lurkers, Manicured Noise, The Pop Group, The Slits, The Mekons. I'd say Joy Division were the biggest name band that played there (especially as it was so late in their history).
