The Pirates - Out Of Their Skulls + Bonus {Out of Print}

The Pirates - Out Of Their Skulls
 Studio and Live Soundboard Recordings @256
Plus 39 Bonus Tracks
{Out of Print}

The death of frontman Johnny Kidd derailed the Pirates back in 1966, but the band's contributions to British rock were not forgotten, and their influence on punk-era pub rock bands like Dr. Feelgood encouraged the remaining players to re-form for this blistering comeback album. Out of Their Skulls pairs a raucous live set with six studio cuts, and if the new tunes don't match up to tough classics like "Please Don't Touch" and "Shakin' All Over," the band's uncompromising strength overrides any weaknesses. Over a decade past their hitmaking prime, the Pirates embrace the aggression and energy of the era and deliver a blazing, no-nonsense set of signature songs and early rock classics with all the lusty abandon, joy, and defiance that defines great rock & roll. Bassist Johnny Spence debuts as lead vocalist, and his big, leathery bellow is occasionally cartoonish but appropriate nonetheless. Mick Green shows off the idiosyncratic lead/rhythm guitar style that made him so influential, pulling buzzing solos out of each chord without losing the riff. Tub man Frank Farley is locked in solid with Spence to produce a rhythm section that is simultaneously metronome tight and bar-fight loose. The studio recordings lack the live set's searing heat, but the sound is cleaner, allowing for a more nuanced appreciation of Green's ringing guitar work; as a result, some of the sillier numbers (like "Do the Dog" and "Gibson Martin Fender") are still useful. American rockers unfamiliar with this very British trio should do a little digging and get their hands on Out of Their Skulls, a truly vibrant album that proves that youth alone is not what fuels the rock & roll engine.
~AMG

Nearly two-and-a-half hours of madman rockin' music from the late Johnny Kidd's backing band, dating from their successful resurrection in 1976 at the behest to faithful disciple Wilko Johnson. Including all three reunion albums as well as several rare singles and previously unissued material, this is ear-opening stuff for the most part. A generation older than their punk contemporaries, legendary Mick Green and his men make most of that breed sound like pretenders. Listen to All In It Together and you hear a great single. Listen to Please Don't Touch or Something Very Strange and you hear where Dr Feelgood got their act. Though bassist Johnny Spence's vocals sometimes flirt with blackface this is largely ace stuff, perfect to accompany that sixth pint!

KMFDM - Angst (1992)

KMFDM - Angst (1992)

Released in 1992 and displayed a departing from the previous albums. The music is far more metal oriented on “Angst” than ever before and the guitars are given a lot of room to express themselves whereas the electronic part stand back. It is hard to know which guitarist is to be missed, Günter Schulz or Mark Durante but the guitars never were as enjoyable again. A song like “A Hole in the Wall” perfectly exemplifies the astonishing efficiency of the guitar work. At the first listen, it sounds horribly repetitive and pretty forgettable but the song actually hides so many variations, layers, unexpected ambient riffs and solos that it ends up being one of the most addictive songs KMFDM has to offer. It is even more impressive considering the simplicity of the riffs. From this point of view, “Sucks” is equally an impressive song. Thrown at the face of the listener like a self-complacent joke, it reveals itself slowly as a very solid track. Noticeably, the over-repeated and over-simplistic main riff manages not to become repetitive because the song has absolutely no structure and goes nowhere. Unique parts come and go and revolve around the main riff like satellites. That’s where the appeal of the song lays. There are no choruses or verses and they were never missed. If the lyrics seem pretty inane, in the end they perfectly fit the song which can be taken as an anti-single anthem and a provocative affirmation of freedom and talent. The last line: “We won’t sell to a major for a couple of bucks, no doubt about it KMFDM sucks.” Could be reformulated: “We consider the music that is popular as mediocre. So our music, which we find great, will certainly not be considered good by most people. Fuck them.”

Belly - Live Roskilde Festival

FM Source @ 320

Following several years in Throwing Muses, as well as a brief detour in the Breeders in 1990, Tanya Donelly formed her own band, Belly, in 1992. With Belly, Donelly expanded her dreamy pop hooks into more concise, catchy songs, as well as harder-edged rock. The band's 1993 debut, Star, became one of the first beneficiaries of the commercialization of alternative rock; it rode to gold status within its first year of release, as "Feed the Tree" made headway on mainstream pop radio. Despite their strong start, Belly never became genuine stars, and once their 1995 follow-up, King, bombed, Donelly disbanded the group in 1996.

The Plugz - Better Luck (1981)

The Plugz - Better Luck (1981)
Studio Recordings @320
{Out of Print}

As a central destination for musicians, actors, filmmakers and artists, Los Angeles has more than its share of unsung, forgotten or behind-the-scenes figures who have made a significant mark on the city in the course of their careers. In this category, one of my favorites is Tito Larriva, who readers might recognize if they review their pop-culture consumption over the last couple of decades. For many, Larriva is the henchman or bandleader in several Robert Rodriguez films. Punk rockers may remember his band the Plugz, who contributed a handful songs to the Repo Man soundtrack, including the unforgettable “Hombre Secreto,” a Spanish-language version of the 60s nugget “Secret Agent Man.” Scholars of Latino culture associate the Plugz for their unconventional version of “La Bamba” and their influence on Chicano rockers of Southern California. 80s music fans may remember Larriva from his coulda-been-a-contender band Cruzados, or from his role in David Byrne’s movie, “True Stories.”

The Mad Caddies - Songs in the Key of Eh

The Mad Caddies are a difficult band to pin down. We’re not sure what’s more impressive, the fact that Mad Caddies have sold over 400,000 albums or they’ve managed to combine a wide range of influences – - dixieland, reggae, punk, ska – - into a collection of songs which are incredibly diverse yet still make for a cohesive listen from start to finish. “We love the fact that we’re able to expand our sound with every album,” Lazor explains, citing the fact that the band goes over just as well at family-friendly festivals as they do late-night rock shows alongside their punk peers. “I don’t know many bands who are able to have such a wide range of songs and styles at their disposal.”

Why would anyone be interested in that look-but-don't-touch horseshit? Strippers are like training wheels for idiots who end up blowing cash screwing prostitutes….Cool."

Crust - 1990-1991 {Out of Print}

It doesn't get much creepier than this...

Crust - Sacred Heart EP & Crust (1990-1991)
Studio recordings @ 320
{Out of Print}

John Hawkins, Jerry Page, and Richard Smith formed the group in 1987. Shortly after its formation, the trio (as "Mud Honey") organized and released a compilation cassette, The Polyp Explodes. Along with Crust, the cassette featured the Austin bands Miracle Room, Ed Hall, ST37, Seemen, and Thanatopsis Throne. The band's early instrumentation included tape loops, feedback devices, spring reverberators, and drum machines, but later incorporated traditional rock instruments such as drum kit, electric guitar, bass and keyboard.

The band embarked on a concert tour of the West Coast in December 1989. Crust achieved some notoriety for their stage antics, which frequently included live earthworms, fresh beef tongues, nudity, and fire.

On Good Friday, 1990, Trance Syndicate released Crust's first EP, Sacred Heart of Crust; it was the first release from the record label. The trio toured the East Coast of the United States and Canada; songs such as "Head Lice" emerged from the group's travel experiences. Trance Syndicate released the band's first full-length album, Crust, in 1991, followed by a second album, Crusty Love in 1994. The band continued to tour, but scaled back its live performances following a series of mishaps (including one in which John Hawkins was stabbed), finally disbanding after an appearance at the 1997 SXSW festival. The band performed a reunion show to a sold-out crowd at Room 710 on May 22, 2004 in Austin.

Fugazi - A Steady Diet Of Nothing - 1991
Studio Recordings

With longtime producer Ted Nicely unavailable, the members of Fugazi, ever resourceful, opted to bypass a producer altogether and record their second full length themselves. If Steady Diet Of Nothing is one of the less essential Fugazi albums, it still boasts some crucial material, like minimalist funk curveball "Long Division," scathing pro-choice battle cry "Reclamation," and the dense and meticulous "Latin Roots." A great album diminished only by its relative place in a discography beyond reproach.

Little Axe - The Wolf That House Built {1994}

Little Axe - The Wolf That House Built {1994}
Studio recordings @320
{Out of Print}

"The Wolf that House Built" is a superb demonstration of how a traditional music form can gain new life with a fresh approach by musicians who revere their source and see how it can go to new levels.  If your sense of the blues is not encapsulated in "purism," you'll be up and on your feet within the first few bars. Great sound texture, too. There's no way I could describe this CD and do it justice, so I won't. I'll just say that anybody who appreciates the blues and has an open mind about music from every genre, will find something that appeals to them here.
