Mercury Rev - The Black Sessions Paris, France

Mercury Rev - The Black Sessions

August 28, 2001

Paris, France

FM Source @ 128

Not so much a band as a long, strange trip, the chaotic avant pop pranksters Mercury Rev formed in Buffalo, NY, in the late '80s. Originally comprised of vocalist David Baker, vocalist/silver pickup guitarist Jonathan Donahue, guitar shaper/single-exhaust clarinetist Grasshopper (born Sean Mackowiak), rooster-tail bass flutist Suzanne Thorpe, bass explorer Dave Fridmann, and mojo stick drummer Jimy Chambers, the sextet -- always rife with personality conflicts -- interacted with one another infrequently, and their first recordings evolved simply as a means of creating soundtracks for the members' experimental student films as well as for Howard Nelson's Lite-Brite and Marco Fogg's Sugardaddy Sea.

Dismemberment Plan - Live

~Timebomb
well i, i am a time bomb and i, i lay forgotten at the bottom of your heart...
i'm fine, ticking away the hours to blow your world apart

i, i am a poison and i, i am still coursing through your bloodstream like
a ghost, like wine, gathering vintage for the day i hurt the most

i, i am a land mine and i, i lay on the soil burned out by battles you thought
you'd won, i've got time... to wait for the footsteps.. of a memory that's on
the run...yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

well i, i am a tar pit and i, i swell like a living thing all at the slightest
touch.. a black grime, yeah, swallowing everything.. a cold and timeless clutch

i, well i am a trip wire, and i, i'm stretching across the road you're
barreling down tonight...a thinish twine, waiting to be released right beyond
your sight

i, well i am a fault line and i, i'm pulling apart the ground that lay beneath
your newest seed.. so fine, moving in inches now a caution you won't know, you
don't know, well i've got time

well i, i am a time bomb i only live in that one moment in which you die... its
not right, its not what i wanted then but you know and i know there's no going
back

i, i am a lost soul and i, i send out a sickened light for anyone to see... a
cry for help, yeah, a warning to stay away... the burning... the blinding...
the reaching in darkness...why, yeah, yeah

Black Fortress of Opium - Live WFMU

Black Fortress of Opium - Live WFMU

In 2006, lyricist/multi-instrumentalist Ajda the Turkish Queen, originally from Houston, Texas met up with Boston, Massachusetts guitarist Tony Savarino. Inspired by the lore surrounding a little town in Turkey - Afyonkarahisar, which means ‘Black Fortress of Opium’ – they shortly thereafter formed the band Black Fortress of Opium together with friends from the Boston scene. Much lore surrounds the history of Afyonkarahisar, where an ancient fortress is perched atop a hill.

Uniting Black Fortress of Opium’s songs is the distinctive sound of female vocals, varying from powerful and soulful to soft and plaintive, combined with American folk instruments and a heady brew of electric guitars that float, swoop, and soar over fluid drumming.

The Watchmen

Rorschach’s Journal~
Dog carcass in alley this morning, tire tread on burst stomach. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout “Save us!”… and I’ll whisper “no.”

Type O Negative - Live House of Blues 2000

Type O Negative - Live House of Blues
March 24, 2000

Excellent Soundboard @128

Type O Negative was a heavy metal band from Brooklyn, New York City. Although commonly viewed as a gothic metal band, Type O has also incorporated elements of doom metal and thrash metal. Their dramatic lyrical emphasis on themes of romance, depression, and death resulted in the nickname "The Drab Four" (in homage to The Beatles' "Fab Four" moniker). The band went Platinum with 1993's Bloody Kisses, and Gold with 1996's October Rust, and gained an enormous following with seven studio albums, two best-of compilations, and concert DVDs.

On April 14, 2010, lead vocalist, bassist, and principal songwriter Peter Steele died, reportedly from heart failure. No official statement from the band has been made about its future but members Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly stated in a November 2010 interview with French music magazine Rock Hard that the band is no more.
